\u00abUn a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s de una mamograf\u00eda \u00abnormal\u00bb, a mi madre le diagnosticaron c\u00e1ncer de mama en estadio IV. El tejido mamario denso ocultaba el c\u00e1ncer, y no sab\u00edamos que hab\u00eda que investigar m\u00e1s\u00bb.<\/b><\/em><\/p>

Mi madre, Irina, no puede compartir su historia por s\u00ed misma. Falleci\u00f3 a los 54 a\u00f1os, hace solo tres a\u00f1os. Yo la comparto por ella, porque su experiencia encierra una lecci\u00f3n que podr\u00eda salvar vidas.<\/p>

Irina era una persona llena de vida, en\u00e9rgica y excepcionalmente sana, sin antecedentes familiares de c\u00e1ncer. Ni siquiera recuerdo que haya tenido alguna vez un resfriado com\u00fan. Segu\u00eda las recomendaciones m\u00e9dicas, incluidas las mamograf\u00edas anuales, que comenz\u00f3 a hacerse a los 44 a\u00f1os. En 2013 y 2014, sus mamograf\u00edas fueron completamente normales. Sin s\u00edntomas y con un historial limpio, no estaba ansiosa por programar su pr\u00f3xima revisi\u00f3n en 2015.<\/p>

Entonces, sin previo aviso, todo cambi\u00f3. Ten\u00eda 47 a\u00f1os cuando un radi\u00f3logo observ\u00f3 una \u00absombra\u00bb en su mamograf\u00eda y le recomend\u00f3 una ecograf\u00eda. Esa ecograf\u00eda revel\u00f3 algo que nadie le hab\u00eda comentado antes: ten\u00eda tejido mamario extremadamente denso. M\u00e1s tarde supimos que el tejido mamario denso puede ocultar el c\u00e1ncer en las mamograf\u00edas y, a menudo, requiere pruebas complementarias.<\/p>

La ecograf\u00eda tambi\u00e9n revel\u00f3 una masa. Se realiz\u00f3 una biopsia. El diagn\u00f3stico fue c\u00e1ncer.<\/p>

Al principio, el pron\u00f3stico parec\u00eda esperanzador. Se recomend\u00f3 una lumpectom\u00eda, pero mi madre opt\u00f3 por una doble mastectom\u00eda para estar m\u00e1s tranquila. Durante la cirug\u00eda, la realidad se hizo evidente. El tumor era mucho m\u00e1s grande y agresivo de lo esperado. Los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos estaban muy afectados. Una tomograf\u00eda por emisi\u00f3n de positrones (PET) confirm\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente la presencia de met\u00e1stasis generalizadas en los huesos.<\/p>

Solo un a\u00f1o antes, su mamograf\u00eda hab\u00eda sido normal.<\/p>

En 2015, le diagnosticaron c\u00e1ncer de mama en estadio IV.<\/p>

Her oncologist was honest: he could not save her life\u2014only extend it. A newly approved drug, Ibrance, gave us precious time. For three years, the cancer remained stable, and my mother lived well. But eventually, the disease progressed. Treatment after treatment followed, each offering diminishing returns. Chemotherapy brought exhaustion, hair loss, and countless side effects.<\/p>

Aumentar la concienciaci\u00f3n sobre la densidad mamaria y ampliar el acceso a pruebas de detecci\u00f3n complementarias puede permitir detectar el c\u00e1ncer antes, cuando los resultados son mejores.<\/p>

My mother\u2019s story is not unique. Cancer is increasingly affecting young, healthy people. Awareness is the first step toward changing that.<\/p>

Dense breast tissue hid the cancer\u2014and we didn\u2019t know to look further.\u201d<\/b><\/em><\/p><p>My mother, Irina, cannot share her story herself. She passed away at the age of 54, just three years ago. I am sharing it for her\u2014because her experience holds a lesson that could save lives.<\/p><p>Irina was vibrant, energetic, and exceptionally healthy, with no family history of cancer. I don\u2019t even remember her ever having a common cold. She followed medical recommendations, including annual mammograms, which she began at age 44. In 2013 and 2014, her mammograms were completely normal. With no symptoms and a clean history, she wasn\u2019t anxious to schedule her next screening in 2015.<\/p><p>Then, without warning, everything changed. She was 47 when a radiologist noticed a \u201cshadow\u201d on her mammogram and recommended an ultrasound. That ultrasound revealed something no one had ever discussed with her before: she had extremely dense breast tissue. We later learned that dense breast tissue can mask cancer on mammograms and often requires supplemental screening.<\/p><p>The ultrasound also revealed a mass. A biopsy followed. The diagnosis was cancer.<\/p><p>Initially, the prognosis seemed hopeful. A lumpectomy was recommended, but my mother chose a double mastectomy for peace of mind. During surgery, the reality became clear. The tumor was far larger and more aggressive than expected. Lymph nodes were heavily involved. A PET scan soon confirmed widespread metastatic disease in her bones.<\/p><p>Just one year earlier, her mammogram had been normal.<\/p><p>In 2015, she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer.<\/p><p>Her oncologist was honest: he could not save her life\u2014only extend it. A newly approved drug, Ibrance, gave us precious time. For three years, the cancer remained stable, and my mother lived well. But eventually, the disease progressed. Treatment after treatment followed, each offering diminishing returns. Chemotherapy brought exhaustion, hair loss, and countless side effects.<\/p><p>Still, we hoped. We believed science would deliver another breakthrough. We fought for time, guided by my mother\u2019s words: \u201cYou can overcome any obstacle\u2014but you have to live to reach it.\u201d<\/p><p>Seven and a half years after diagnosis, we lost the battle.<\/p><p>Today, we know that ultrasound is more effective than mammography alone for detecting cancer in dense breast tissue. Both dense tissue and tumors appear white on a mammogram, making early detection difficult. Raising awareness about breast density and expanding access to supplemental screening can catch cancer earlier\u2014when outcomes are better.<\/p><p>My mother\u2019s story is not unique. Cancer is increasingly affecting young, healthy people. Awareness is the first step toward changing that.<\/p><p><em>~ Irina\u2019s daughter, Sasha<\/em><\/p><p><strong>Know your breast density. Ask about supplemental screening. Share this story.<\/strong><\/p><p>If you or someone you love has dense breast tissue, mammography alone may not be enough. Ultrasound and other supplemental screening tools can detect cancers that mammograms miss.<\/p><p>Talk to your healthcare provider. Ask what your breast density is. Advocate for appropriate screening.
